OIL DRILLING

The Ionian Sea is a small paradise. That’s how we feel it, most of the residents and visitors of the area. Those who know the area understand the natural beauty we are talking about, those who do not, we recommend you to visit it unreservedly.
Probably you have to hurry, as its future looks ominous. Black, like the oil that is hiding in its depths, and soon to surface as we begin mining it. All the Ionian sea area, from north to south and a vast area of the western greek mainland, have been divided into blocks and partly given to companies to exploit its mineral wealth.

Some say it is the only and the best choice! The inhabitants of the area, who will be directly affected, have never been asked. They are invited today (after signing the agreements!) to get informed officially by the companies about the profits of these investments for the region but also for our bankrupt country ...
We however, believe that our country - like any other country - is really poor when it loses its natural capital: fertile land, clean air, rich seas.

We worry and we share our concerns about oil drilling, since it has to do with all of us, wherever we are, wherever it takes place. We now know that by continuing to invest in fossil fuels, all we can do is speed up the effects of climate change. So we are wondering: Do we really want to see the worst of it? Do we really want to take such a risk?

We, have already answered. We say NO to oil drilling and we connect our voices with all those who believe that the oil age must come to the past if we want to have a chance of a better future. You? What do you say?

We devoted 7 days to the big issue of oil drilling, to share with you what looks interesting about the subject. If you feel that you want to know more, take some time to have a look before you answer! If you know the issue and believe that we risk too much for nothing, help us spread the message!

Our efforts continue through the local assembly "Open Assembly of Kefalonia & Ithaca against oil drilling" in which we are active members. The assembly's purpose is to inform and increase the awareness of the local community about the dangers of oil extraction. Furthermore, we took the initiative with a few friends to create and run a website dedicated to this cause. Through savegreekseas.com we are seeking to learn what 'hydrocarbon exploration and drilling' means, what the concession contracts entail, what is at stake to be lost forever if the plans are implemented. Our goal is to unite our voices with the Citizens' Initiatives Against Hydrocarbon Drilling and to support the fair fight for our children's right to clean air and to clean water.
